Primarily correspondence, also a few accounts, memorandums, addresses and other misc. papers of Israel, James and John Pemberton of Philadelphia. Includes 26 letters (1743-1773) of Israel Pemberton discussing Friends and Quaker concerns, especially the Quaker "Friendly Association" and its dealings with Native Americans, including letters relating to Pemberton's efforts in 1759 to transport goods for Indians and to work of Christian Frederic Post; also drafts of Israel Pemberton's letters to Sir William Johnson on a 1756 conference with the Indians, and to Benjamin Hersey and the Mennonites in Lancaster in 1758; includes letters from Benjamin Bagnall, William Callender [with Joseph Morris, John Reynell, Jacob Lewis, Owen Jones, Richard Wistar, Jacob Shoemaker and Thomas Say], William Edmonds, George Fisher, Thomas Forster, Elizabeth Robinson, Teedyuscung and others; also memorandums of agreements (1759) with James Kenny and Samuel Lightfoot re: Indian goods. Includes 17 letters (1742-1782) of James Pemberton chiefly discussing the family shipping business and legal and financial matters, also a letter (1769) from Rachel Wilson telling of her travels in the ministry. Includes 46 letters (1753-1789) of John Pemberton with Friends in Great Britain and America discussing business, news of Friends, Friends' travel in the ministry and Adam Solomon (a free black); also John Pemberton's copy of a letter to the Executive Council, 1782, informing them of his intention to travel to Europe for religious reasons; correspondents include Hannah Foster, Hannah Harris, Susanna Hatton, Pearson Parvin, Joseph Row, Adam Solomon, Isaac Whitelock, John Woodcock and others.

John Pemberton (1727-1795) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 25 (Old Style), 1727, the youngest son of Israel Pemberton Sr. and Rachel Read.
